There comes a time in every professor’s life when her students ask, “Why do we keep reading stuff with ghost babies in it?” This happened to me about halfway through this last semester of English Composition. Our reading list spooled one, two, THREE stories with actual infant ghosts in them. Here are the ghost baby texts that I unconsciously assigned to my class, in case you, like me, have a crazy and unprecedented fixation. The first ghost baby happened at the end of Maxine Hong Kingston’s story “No Name Woman”â€"the story I NEVER tire of reading. The speculation! The scandal! The narrative is a boogey-man story told to the narrator by her mother. The thesis is Don’t have sex. You’ll get pregnant, embarrass us, and die. This is what happened to the narrator’s aunt, and the family agreed to forget she existed. And at the end, the Aunt, who killed herselfâ€"don’t worry, you find this all out in the first paragraphâ€"shows up as a drowned ghost, holding her ghost baby girl, “long(ing) to pull down a substitute.” The story spends most of its energy just unpacking  â€œWait, Hold on, Mom. What exactly happened?” The second piece I assigned with a ghost baby in it was Timothy Schaffert’s “The Mermaid in the Tree,” which is essentially a gritty, American retelling of Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Little Mermaid,” but from the perspective of the girl whom the prince actually marries. In fact, that girl uses the ghost baby as collateral. (The mermaid killed herself to rescue everyone from the freakery that was being a half-human half-beast and/or caring for one…and she’s pregnant with the half-human-half-mermaid baby of said prince.) The girl he marries conjures the ghost baby to keep him from straying. Out of guilt. (She’s the worst.) So far we have two women (mothers) whose deaths are used as collateral. Means to an end  for the protagonists to get what they want. And the women who killed themselves also killed their children. There’s more than one trend there. The third ghost baby is from Toni Morrison’s novel Beloved. She’s basically a poltergeist, angry at her own infanticide and haunting her former-slave mother who killed her child to prevent her from going into slavery. I didn’t spoil the ending of any of these narratives, but rather gave you the inciting incidents. I’ve tried to figure the trope patterns and symbolism of these baby ghosts, but really they say more about the mothers than the babies: the mothers care more about the infants than themselves. Their deaths are a kind of purity, a rescuing of them from suffering. How terrible could it be? A bastard girl in rural 1920s China? A freaky cryptid in this fictional, anti-mermaid coastal town? Watching your child get sold into slavery? Um. TERRIBLE. THE MOST TERROR. The pattern I found was that motherhood is constantly falling on grenades in hopes of saving the child. Best case scenario, moms save themselves, too. The saving just comes in the form of an end to suffering. But I could be wrong. What do you think? Clean Well-Lighted Place In "A Clean Well-Lighted Place", Earnest Hemingway focuses on the pain of old age suffered by a man that we meet in a caf late one night. Through the use of dialogue, Hemingway creates three characters that symbolize the stages of life: birth, living, and death. Additionally, the tone of the story is created in three ways. First, he contrasts light and dark to show the difference between the difference between this man and the young people around him. Secondly, he uses the old man's deafness as an image of his separation from the rest of the world. Lastly, Hemingway uses the image of "nada" or nothing. Hemingway's tone and choice of language leaves the reader feeling that they too cannot escape from the doldrums of the "dead" years of their own life. Through the language of dialogue, three characters emerge creating a symbolic illustration of the progression of life. The young waiter states, " I have confidence, I am all confidence"(258). He displays his eagerness to conquer the world. When we are young, we live for today, for ourselves, without regard for what the future may hold. Tomorrow is a dream; tomorrow is something left to the old. However, in all his confidence he lacks patience and understanding, which can only come with the experience of life. Because of this lack of experience, he is not capable of compassion for the old man "You have youth confidence and a job" the older waiter replies (258). The older waiter symbolizes the "living" stage of life. He is filled with despair, but not yet completely devoid of hope. He is uncertain of what the rest of his life may bring, but a modicum of hope still exists. The old waiter has the omniscient view of the three progressions of life. He has lived beyond his "birth" stage, is teetering in the "living" stage, and through the unfolding life of the old man, is painfully aware of the future. Is it fear of growing old, the loneliness, or despair, which delivers the old waiter into his dark, unclean world of nothing? His mockery of the "Our Father" is the cumulative answer to the question. He has lost his own meaning of life. When hope has waned, despair overwhelms and we see the transition from the living to the time of dying. The old man has journeyed through all the progressions of life. The old man's death wish is further played out through the metaphor of insomnia, an ailment that he apparently shares with the older waiter. Along with the development of three characters, Hemingway creates the overall tone of the story by first contrasting between light and dark. The most obvious image is the caf, " A Clean, Well-Lighted Place". It is a refuge from the darkness of the night outside. Darkness is a symbol of fear and loneliness. The light symbolizes comfort and the company of others. There is hopelessness in the dark, while the light calms the nerves. Unfortunately for the old man, the light is an artificial one, and its peace is both temporary and incomplete. "... the tables were empty except where the old man sat in the shadow of the leaves of the tree that moved slightly in the wind"(256). Possibly, the old man hides in the shadows of the leaves because he recognizes the shortcomings of his refuge. Perhaps he is drawn to the shadows so that the darkness of his own age will not be so visible. Unlike the young waiter who is not frighten by the darkness because of his companion that waits for him in the dark, the old man has lost his wife. Even his ears bring him a sort of darkness as they hold out the sounds of the world. The old man's deafness is also a powerful image that contributes to the tone of the story. " ...the old man liked to sit late because he was deaf and now at night it was quiet and he could feel the difference"(256). Deafness ostracizes the old man form the rest of the world. In the day, everything must be a reminder to him of his disconnection from the world. In the caf so late at night he is not missing much. One might even conjecture that the old man chooses to be deaf rather than face the nastiness and disrespect spoken by his juniors. Lastly, Hemingway uses the image of "Nothing." Scientists remove the stem cells from embryonic tissue known as blastocysts, and as a result the embryo dies (Latham). Thus, the controversy - is this blastocyst, which, if allowed to continue growing, will become a normal human baby if in vitro fertilization is used, human at this point? Looking for a Gas Gas is everywhere. There is something called the atmosphere. That's a big layer of gas that surrounds the Earth. Gases are random groups of atoms. In  solids,  atoms  and molecules are compact and close together. Liquids  have atoms that are spread out a little more. Gases are really spread out and the atoms and molecules are full of energy. They are bouncing around constantly. Gases can fill a container of any size or shape. It doesn't even matter how big the container is. The molecules still  spread out  to fill the whole space equally.That is one of their  physical  characteristics. Think about a balloon. No matter what shape you make the balloon, it will be evenly filled with the gas molecules. The molecules are spread equally throughout the entire balloon. Liquids can only fill the bottom of the container, while gases can fill it entirely. The shape of liquids is really dependent on the force of  gravity, while gases are light enough to have a little more freedom to move. Compressing Gases Gases hold huge amounts of  energy, and their molecules are spread out as much as possible.With very little pressure, when compared to liquids and solids, those molecules can be  compressed. It happens all of the time. Combinations of pressure and decreasing temperature force gases into tubes that we use every day. You might see compressed air in a spray bottle or feel the carbon dioxide rush out of a can of soda. Those are both examples of gas forced into a smaller space than it would want, and the gas escapes the first chance it gets. The faster these particles are moving when they hit the wall, t he greater the force they exert on the wall. Since the force per collision becomes larger as the temperature increases, the pressure of the gas must increase as well. Boyle's Law (P  = 1/v)Gases can be compressed because most of the volume of a gas is empty space.If we compress a gas without changing its temperature, the average kinetic energy of the gas particles stays the same. There is no change in the speed with which the particles move, but the container is smaller. Thus, the particles travel from one end of the container to the other in a shorter period of time. This means that they hit the walls more often. Any increase in the frequency of collisions with the walls must lead to an increase in the pressure of the gas. Thus, the pressure of a gas becomes larger as the volume of the gas becomes smaller.Charles' Law (V  Ã‚  T)The average kinetic energy of the particles in a gas is proportional to the temperature of the gas. Because the mass of these particles is constant, the particles must move faster as the gas becomes warmer. If the walls of the container are flexible, it will expand until the pressure of the gas once more balances the pressure of the atmosphere.The volume of the gas therefore becomes larger as the temperature of the gas increases. James Jarvis Essay

In Alan Paton’s Cry, the Beloved Country there is two protagonists, Reverend Stephen Kumalo, and James Jarvis. Both characters play significant roles to the story but James Jarvis’ situation is noteworthy and inspirational. James is an influential, dynamic character because his opinion dramatically changes upon reading his son’s manuscript. A series of events influences James to shift his mindset into the mindset of his son. An analysis on James Jarvis’ changing mindset reveals that his son’s manuscript, realizing his shortcomings, and Reverend Kumalo are all things that cause him to change drastically. When James’ son, Arthur, dies he visits Arthur’s home and finds his incomplete manuscript. When reading his writings, James finds that his son would have risked anything to help other people, and ended up doing just that. Although James is hurt by the fact that Arthur writes about his parents in a negative way â€Å"..But of South Africa I learned nothing at all.† (207), James takes the criticism and improves from it by continuing his son’s battle. James discovers that his son researches tremendously on the problems of their society, and was seeking help in the development of the social structure in South Africa. Arthur’s house contains hundreds of books and â€Å"†¦between the books there were four pictures, of Christ crucified, and Abraham Lincoln, and the white gabled house of Vergelegen, and a painting of leafless willows by a river in a wintry veld.† (176) From these pictures of Jesus, Lincoln, the gabled hose, and the leafless will ow discloses the symbolism that Arthur admires. Jesus and Lincoln were men of action; they showed love for their friends, and at the same time, their enemies. These two men suffered and died for their beliefs, the same way Arthur did. A water willow represents freedom, therefore, it can be concluded that the painting of the leafless willows represents a loss of freedom for the blacks in South Africa and how Arthur wants to gain their freedom back and help them get equal rights. When his son is shot and killed, James gets to finally know and understand him and his values. â€Å"Jarvis filled his pipe slowly, and listened to the tale of his, to this tale of a stranger† (172). James reads his sons speeches and understands his country’s segregation, relieving him of his ignorance. This comparison enables James to better understand his son and realize how concerned and devoted Arthur was for a change in humanity. After James discovers his son’s views, James starts to realize his shortcomings, and realizes that the problems of others and not only of his own. James begins to help the minority. Since his son’s death and the acquaintance of Stephen, James donates 1000 pounds to the African boy’s club. Jarvis is not just giving the money as a gift; instead he gives the money to the club because he knew the club would improve the country’s condition. Using his son’s views again, James decides to do something about Kumalo’s village, which is falling apart. He sends milk for the children, an agricultural expert, and builds a church for Ndotsheni. James builds the church because the current church in Ndotsheni is old. James and Stephen both live in the farming areas of South Africa, share the love for the same land, and what is in their lives. They each have a son of whom they consider a stranger but after they lose their sons, they begin to understand them. They both learn the problems in South Africa through their sons, and after realization, they both try to do something to improve the social, and racial differences which plague Johannesburg. Both men are strong but James Jarvis has to be the strongest for his ability to take his son’s death the way he does. Instead of being an irate, cruel, sorrowful man; he picks up where his son left off. It’s realistic that James can be forgiving to Stephen even though he is the father of Absalom, the boy who killed Arthur Jarvis. James Jarvis reacts this way because he doesn’t want anyone else to experience the same thing that happened to him; instead he wants to fix the problem before it occurs again. When his son is shot and killed, James finally gets to know and understand him and his values. â€Å"Jarvis filled his pipe slowly, and listened to the tale of his son, to this tale of a stranger† (172). He reads his sons speeches and understands his country’s segregation, relieving him of his ignorance. James Jarvis was a dynamic character that changes throughout the novel. The representation shows how South African problems educated James Jarvis, and turned him into an understanding, and influential man. If Arthur Jarvis had never been killed, James Jarvis would’ve not been educated by his son’s writings or by Stephen Kumalo.
